Southern California Mattress Company to Hire Veterans

The Southern Californian mattress firm, Sit ‘n Sleep, has pledged to hire 50 veterans this year. Sit ‘n Sleep currently has 28 stores in Southern California and is opening a further five by the end of the year.

Larry Milller, the CEO of Sit ‘n Sleep said he recognized the difficulties returning veterans faced in finding employment.

“They have sacrificed and served for the benefit of this country and yet we are doing very little to encourage hiring,” he said.

Around 30,000 veterans will be returning to California this year, according to the state Department of Veterans Affairs. Furthermore, while the California unemployment rate is 11.1% as many as 28% of Californian veterans are unemployed and struggling to find work.

Miller believes that veterans will make excellent employees and says applicants should not be deterred by not having previous selling experience as the company provides a five-week training course.

Workers needed will include workers in sales, administration workers, customer service representatives and truck drivers. Sit ‘n Sleep will be attending various veteran hiring fairs this year, but applicants can also apply for positions through their website.

Sit ‘n Sleep’s commitment to hiring veterans appears to be part of an emerging trend to assist returning veterans in finding employment, such as  GE’s recent announcement to employ 5,000 veterans.
