Law School Assistance for Veterans
In addition to existing programs like the Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program, veterans have the unique opportunity to gain a quality education at no cost to them through scholarships and grants.
There are many private scholarships available to veterans pursuing an education. The scholarships can either be general scholarships or tailored to specific career interests or goals. A good military scholarship program is the Tuition Assistance (TA) Program.
Members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard are eligible for the Armed Forces Tuition Assistance (TA) where Congress has granted each service the ability to pay up to 100% of the tuition expenses of its members. Each individual service contains its own unique criteria for eligibility, the application process and restrictions, and obligated service.
With the unique opportunity to receive a free education, veterans and military personnel are encouraged to explore their education and career options. One such venture is for military members to attend law school to obtain a JD Law Degree
The JD program’s credits requirement is comprised of about half elective courses and half required courses. Students are allowed to enroll in elective courses during their second year of study with many opting to begin taking clinical courses as soon as their third semester. JD candidates have the freedom of tailoring their school schedule to their individual needs with four divisions of full-time or part-time study to choose from. So, whether you want to attend part-time law school or go full-time, law schools can accommodate your needs.
Students may select the option that best meets his/her needs.
- Full-time Day Division—3 years, 86 credits
- Part-time Day Division—4 years, 86 credits
- Part-time Evening Division—4 years, 86 credits (classes begin at 6 in the evening)
- Special Part-time Program—up to 6 years, 86 credits (combination of day and evening classes for parents with primary child-rearing responsibilities)
