Online Education Provisions Of The Post 9/11 GI Bill

10 Apr, 2009 GI Bill

Inside Higher Ed has an interesting article concerning the benefits of the Post 9/11 GI Bill; In “Disincentive for Distance Learning“,  Author Elizabeth Redden argues that distance learners are perhaps not gaining the housing stipend benefits of the Post 9/11 GI Bill and may therefore be discouraged towards participation in online education programs. She describes the concerns of several online-only institutions that have served military education for decades, such as Capella University, as substance for her argument.

Fortunately, the legislation  behind the Post 9/11 GI Bill is being revised to reflect this issue. Students attending the online education programs, especially towards colleges tailored towards military veterans like Colorado State University Global Campus, Jones International University or Robert Morris University will eventually be able  to receive financial support like their campus-based student counterparts. The distance requirement that many veterans have in pursuing a post-military education is therefore now being factored into the bill.
